  • Infinite (Serpentinite) is a metamorphic rock that forms from the alteration of ultramafic rocks in the Earth's mantle, specifically through a process called serpentinization. This process involves the hydration and metamorphic transformation of olivine and pyroxene into serpentine minerals, such as lizardite, antigorite, and chrysotile. Serpentinite is characterized by its green color, silky luster, and slippery feel, which is reminiscent of a serpent's skin, hence its name. Scientifically, serpentinite is of interest due to its unique properties and formation process; it plays a significant role in geology, particularly in subduction zones and oceanic crust, and is associated with the sequestration of carbon dioxide and the formation of asbestos minerals. It also affects the chemistry of seawater near tectonic boundaries and supports distinct ecosystems due to its release of hydrogen and methane gases.

  • Infinite (Serpentinite) itself is not inherently toxic; however, it can contain naturally occurring asbestos, specifically the form known as chrysotile, which is one of several minerals that can form in the serpentinization process. Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, are toxic and can lead to serious lung conditions, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Therefore, while serpentinite as a rock may not pose a direct health risk, activities that disturb serpentinite deposits, such as mining, quarrying, or cutting, can release asbestos fibers into the air, posing a significant health hazard. Caution and appropriate safety measures are advised when handling or working with serpentinite rocks or areas where the presence of asbestos is suspected.
