Black Tourmaline, scientifically known as Schorl, is a crystalline boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as iron, magnesium, or aluminum, making it incredibly versatile in its physical properties and appearance. It belongs to the Tourmaline family, which is well-known for its rich variety in colors; however, Black Tourmaline stands out for its deep, opaque shades ranging from jet black to deep brown. This mineral is renowned not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties, meaning it can generate an electric charge under pressure or when heated. Found primarily in metamorphic rocks like schist and marble, Black Tourmaline is abundantly located in regions such as Brazil, Africa, Pakistan, and the USA. Scientifically, it has been studied for its ability to emit far-infrared radiation and negative ions, contributing to discussions around its potential benefits in environmental purification and stress relief, although these claims are more metaphysical than scientifically substantiated.
Black Tourmaline (Schorl) is considered non-toxic and safe for handling and use in various applications, including jewelry and decorative items. Its chemical composition, primarily a boron silicate structure with elements like iron, magnesium, or aluminum, does not include any known toxic substances that could leach out under normal conditions of use. However, as with any mineral, it's advisable to wash hands after handling the raw crystal form, especially before eating, to avoid ingesting any small particles that might detach from the mineral's surface. While powdered forms of minerals can pose inhalation risks, Black Tourmaline in its solid, polished state is widely regarded as safe for everyday contact and use.
